I have qualified for RIO 2016 Olympics!

Words can’t describe how amazing this moment is. I have been working towards this goal for most of my life and I finally made it! There are so many people to thank for helping me get to this point. I will mention a few but this post would be too long if I mentioned everyone.

Thank you to all my past and present coaches, Chris Dold who I only recently started working with but we have already achieved so much. To my best friend and training partner Sarah Douglas who’s been by my side, working hard day in and day out. My mother, Deb who’s funny character and caring nature has captured the heart of all my friends. My Godmother, Elspeth who has supported me in more ways than I thought possible. To every single one of my friends for making this journey so much fun. To my supports – CSIO, RCYC, Sail Canada, OSA. My amazing trainer – Sheldon Persad who has believed in me from day 1. And to my entire family for making my dream, their dream.

This isn’t the end though. I have so much work to do ahead of me and Rio is only 88 days away!! I need your help to do that – Please consider donating to my Make-a-Champ page and help me get a medal in Rio!!

Canadian Radial sailor Brenda Bowskill secures Olympic spot

Rio 2016
Rio 2016

Immediate Release
Monday, May 9th, 2016 – Kingston, ON

Sail Canada is pleased to announce that Brenda Bowskill (RCYC) has been selected to represent Canada in Rio in the single-handed Radial class.

Brenda has consistently performed as top Canadian Radial sailor over the course of the Olympic trials including her most recent 10th place finish at the 2016 Radial World Championships in Vallarta, Mexico. Other notable performances include 15th at 2016 Miami World Cup and 2015 Senior National Championship title. Brenda also finished 8th at the 2015 Pan American Games in her hometown Toronto, ON.

The Whitby native sails out of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and has been a member of the National team for the last 6 years. Brenda will make her first trip to the Olympic Games at the age of 24. “I am so excited to have been selected as the Radial representative for the 2016 Rio Olympics! I don’t even really think it has fully sunken in yet,” exclaims Bowskill. “This journey has challenged me as an athlete and a person in so many ways. To have the privilege to represent my country on the biggest sporting stage in the world is an honour. I am very much looking forward to making my Olympic debut!

Brenda’s 10th place finish at the World Championships also earns her the title of Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month for April.

This most recent Olympic selection brings the total count up to 5 Canadian sailors punching their ticket to the Rio Games. Brenda will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee along with Nacra teammates Nikola Girke and Luke Ramsay and 49erFX squad Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd at the end of June. The Canadian Olympic trials continue for the remaining sailing hopefuls through until the end of Weymouth World Cup in Dorset, UK in early June.

Prior to being named to the final Canadian Rio 2016 Team, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Team Selection Committee following its receipt of nominations by Sail Canada.

Finished 10th at the 2016 World Championships!

Finished 10th at the 2016 World Championships! This is my best world championships result in my sailing career and I am very happy with how things are coming together. All those early morning rides along the coast, late nights in the gym, and endless hours testing our fitness really paid off over these past 7 days of racing against the worlds best. It felt like a marathon!

This is another event considered in the Rio Olympic selection and I am coming away with another top Canadian performance result.

As always, a big thank you to everyone on my team supporting me in this journey. To mention a few, Sarah Douglas, Chris Dold, my entire family, the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, Sheldon Persad, Judy Goss, Sail Canada, and all my friends.
